Abstract

Modern Islamic boarding schools (pesantren) in Indonesia have adopted an integrated curriculum that combines religious and general sciences as an effort to overcome the dichotomy of knowledge inherited from the colonial era. However, managing an integrated curriculum is not easy because pesantren must balance between preserving tradition and adapting to innovation. This study aims to analyze the integrated curriculum management model in modern pesantren, identify the challenges faced, and formulate strategies for balancing tradition and innovation in curriculum management. This research employs a library research method with a qualitative-descriptive approach. Primary data sources include the Qur'an, Hadith, and classical Islamic texts relevant to education. Secondary data sources were obtained from scientific journals, books, and research reports on pesantren curriculum, integrated curriculum management, and Islamic education published between 2015 and 2025. Data analysis was conducted using content analysis with data reduction, presentation, and verification stages. The main findings of this study indicate that the integrated curriculum in modern pesantren generally adopts the webbed model with a proportion of approximately 50:50 between religious and general sciences, supported by a boarding school system that enables 24-hour learning. However, implementation faces significant challenges including limited teacher competence, heavy student workload, unsynchronized evaluation systems with national standards, diverse parental expectations, and inadequate funding. To overcome these challenges, five strategies are offered: continuous teacher training, development of integrated teaching materials by internal teams, formulation of authentic and comprehensive evaluation systems, optimization of the boarding school system as an integration laboratory, and building partnerships with external parties. This research contributes to the development of Islamic education management theory while providing practical guidance for pesantren administrators and policymakers
